Causes - Clinical and laboratory findings
Causes
Iron deficiency due to reduced dietary intake such as animal-
- Chronic blood loss due to :
- Bleeding Ulcers
- Tumor of the gastrointestinal or Urinary tract
- Heavy infestation with blood sucking external parasites such as lice , fleas
- Menorrhea in Primates
- Reduced iron absorption caused by malabsorption
Clinical and laboratory findings
1 - Complete blood count (CBC)
- RBCs are microcytic hypochromic anemia
- Hb concentration , RBCs count and PCV are reduced
2- Blood film
shows microcytic , hypochromic red blood cells, anisocytosis and poikilocytosis
3- Esinophilia
occurs with parasitic infestations
4- Secondary thrombocytosis
5- Reticulocyte count is normal
6- Iron profile : Serum iron , serum ferritin , iron% saturation are reduced but total iron binding capacity (TIBC) is increased
7- Bone marrow Hypercellular with erythroid hyperplasia and reduced M/E ratio (myeloid/erythro) ratio
