The liver performs many diverse and complex tasks that can be categorized as metabolism , detoxification ,excretion , or secretion and storage functions .It is estimated that the liver performs more than 500 separate activities , and if the liver becomes completely non functional , death will ensue within 10 hours .Every substance that is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract must first pass through the liver before it is distributed by the general circulation , and most substances are altered in some way during this passage .
It acts as a storage compartment of many substances and release stored materials as the body needs them .
